In Radio Westkreuzfunk Soundtrackcity presents the project Sonic Placemaking Berlin in a one-hour radio show, hosted by ABA’s Air SALON via Colaboradio (88.4 MHz in Berlin and 90.7 MHz in Potsdam). Expect conversations, interviews and field recordings from well-known and lesser-known places in Berlin.
“What we hear profoundly influences our experience of (urban) space, yet the richness of the urban sonic environment is rarely taken into account when designing actual places. On the contrary, matters of the audible are usually discussed in narrow or binary terms, or are simply overlooked in planning decisions. Guided by the question ‘How should this place sound?’ Soundtrackcity aims to the interrogate the complex socio-spatial environments that cities are, and the sounds one inevitably encounters, co-produces, loathes or cherishes in them.

In the one hour radio show Radio Westkreuzfunk you will be listening to one of Berlin‘s lesser known sonic goldmines, namely the area around Westkreuz S-Bahn station. At first glance, Westkreuz appears to be dominated by the human-made infrastructures facilitating the fast-paced life of all those entering and leaving Berlin. But as one shifts to different perceptual registers, there emerges a stronger sense of diversity and intimacy. Through field recordings, conversations and spontaneous remarks this mix explores what it means to find oneself in a sonic place and ponders the possibility of designing such places.
