This year, Soundtrackcity will once again participate in REVEIL with a streaming box from radio.earth on 3 and 4 May. REVEIL is a relay of audio streams during sunrise on the first weekend of May, allowing you to take a 24-hour listening tour around the world. In 2025, REVEIL will be organised for the 12th time.
Live audio stream from VTV Frankendael
In 2024, Soundtrackcity provided a live audio stream from a non-publicly accessible piece of wild urban nature sandwiched between infrastructure at Westkreuz, Berlin. In contrast to last year, Soundtrackcity will now provide a live audio stream from an accessible, well maintained and ecologically cultivated piece of land. We are interested how these two will compare. The stream will be from VTV Frankendael, an allotment garden near the former village of Driemond, on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
A refuge for nature
The allotment garden is quite wild and has a high level of biodiversity. It serves as a refuge for plants and animals that have no chance of survival in the surrounding area, which is dominated by human infrastructure, agro-industrial desertification and advancing urbanisation.
The community garden borders the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, which is situated at a higher level and is one of the busiest shipping routes in the Netherlands. The mechanical noise of the passing inland vessels is soothing in a way. On the other side is a vast recreational area created by Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch state forestry commission) that suffers from artificially maintained low groundwater levels and excessive nitrogen deposition. As a result the undergrowth is dull and consists mainly of brambles and nettles, and biodiversity is low. The allotment garden, on the other hand, is very biodiverse and seems to function as a refuge in relation to the surrounding area. Because there are all kinds of nooks and crannies on the site, many different animals and plants find a home here. For people, the allotment garden feels like a breath of fresh air.
We are curious to hear what will be going on at sunrise!
UPDATE: the stream is already live at mobilemic23 . We’re testing different spots at the area.
Here is some audio from a previous streaming session at the same location:
