Community Labs

Urban Sound Lab
Citizens can help build better-sounding cities by exchanging their hearing experiences at workshops and listening walks as well as during online and offline creative sessions. This not only helps them discover how everyone experiences sounds differently, but also helps them find similarities. The findings are presented to wider audiences in the form of theatre, radio programmes or street interventions.

Urban Sound Lab participants evolve into autonomous researchers and become more aware of the social and political aspects of sound in the urban environment. This also entails the continual formulation of research questions in consultation with residents. The research focus has shifted since the project started in 2018. In the beginning, the dominant question was: what is sound? But that soon shifted to: what does sound do?
