This evening the curators, artists of Sonic West and thinkers presented their thoughts on the project Sonic West and discussed the social and political aspects of sound in the urban environment. (NL tekst hieronder)
Sonic West: collective urbanism through a multiplicity of listening
Sonic West is a multi-year (2017–2022) participatory social sound project that stimulates the public awareness of urban sound and provides a space for exchange and research into the personal listening experiences of citizens. How does your city sound? What do you hear in your house, your street, your neighbourhood?
These hearing experiences are almost always personal, subjective and fleeting. They are mostly cast aside by urban planners as insignificant, meaningless and of no use for research or practice. We do not agree and think that exactly these experiences are what creates the urban environment. Discussing, exchanging and reliving these experiences can turn the urban space into a collective place and bring about social and political engagement.

Symposium Sonic West
Tijdens een avondvullend programma presenteerden de curatoren en kunstenaars van Sonic West en beschouwers van buiten hun ideeën over het project en bespraken ze de sociale en politieke aspecten van geluid in de stedelijke omgeving.
Sonic West is een meerjarig (2017–2022) participatief sociaal geluidsproject dat het publieke bewustzijn van stedelijk geluid stimuleert en ruimte biedt voor uitwisseling en onderzoek naar de persoonlijke luisterervaringen van burgers. Hoe klinkt je stad? Wat hoor je in je huis, je straat, je buurt?
Deze luisterervaringen zijn bijna altijd persoonlijk, subjectief en vluchtig. Ze worden door stedenbouwkundigen meestal terzijde geschoven als onbeduidend, betekenisloos en niet van waarde voor onderzoek of praktijk. Wij zien dat anders en denken dat juist deze ervaringen de stedelijke omgeving creëren. Het bespreken, uitwisselen en herbeleven van deze ervaringen kan de stedelijke ruimte tot een collectieve plaats maken en sociaal en politiek engagement teweegbrengen.
Dit is het derde symposium dat Soundtrackcity organiseert in Amsterdam. In 2011 organiseerden we in het Amstelhotel Het geluid van de Stad en in 2017 in de Reinwardtacademie Geluid als Stadmaker. Een Engelstalig verslag van Symposium Sonic West staat hier.
